How to pick a watermelon

Updated: Mar 25, 2022

Been having a hard time picking a good watermelon, and then I googled it. The sound check never worked for me because even if they sounded different, it could never figure out which was the desirable sound.

“A ripe watermelon should have a deep sound when you thump it with your hand or fist, somewhat resembling a tenor. If it has a hollow or flat sound, it’s likely overripe.”

Deep to me is baritone or bass, not tenor, but hollow or flat does not help me either. If you have ever heard me sing you would understand my struggle. Recalling a conversation with my friend Miles, as he played major chords and minor chords demonstrating the bright happy feeling of the major chord and the melancholy of the minor chord. I could not hear the difference. Had a few voice lessons and was able to sing a note like if the instructor stuck the middle C key, but if she struck a chord in middle C, I could not. Anyhow, enough about my musical ineptitude.

I like to slice the watermelon like in the video, but if I’m serving for a party, then I’ll cut it in the more traditional way where people can pick up a wedge by the rind.

If it is just family, I cut it this way and offer the sweet part to my wife and son, as you would an offering to the gods.

This is the page that I found while at the grocery store, and it helped tremendously.

Kiss yourself for finding deliciousness.
