Cheeseburgers, Tom’s way

Updated: Mar 25, 2022

Keeping with my “quick and easy” theme that is dedicated to Lucifer, my son, this little video incorporates timing.

Even though millennials and Gen Z are very different, they have this in common. None of them have any concept of time, timing, or planning.

While Lucifer is a drummer, he has mastered timing, but not the timing that I’m talking about.

The most important thing about this post is the timing so that everything is done at the same time. The biggest challenge is having everything done at the same time while everyone is hungry.

I’d ask my wife, “what do you want for dinner?” Her reply, “I’m not hungry.” Two hours later she’s eating a bag of chips. I ask, “what do you want for dinner?” Her reply, “I got hungry, ate chips, and now I’m no longer hungry”

Burgers are truly an amazing product that we take for granted. I suspect that the burger was first invented as a way to not waste the last scraps of meat from a cow or kill. Over time, they became popular for their deliciousness. Sometimes, I prefer a burger to a steak, depends on my moooood.

So, how do you make a quick meal for a bunch of college kids? Luck, you need a lot of luck, or you can do this. Total time 45 – 50 minutes, which means you need a 1 hour window to pull this off.

Gather your ingredients – in this case it is Burgers, Tots, your desired cheese, buns, any other toppings, salt and pepper and any other spice you intend to use.

Burgers and Tots

I used Schweid and Son’s Brisket and Chuck blend. They are delicious. I would normally use 93% lean beef, not as delicious, but still very good if you follow my method. Also for this thickness of burger, 4 minutes per side yields a medium rare burger. If you have guests that want them more well done, try 6 minutes per side. I recommend using two separate pans for this purpose. Start the medium well burgers 4 minutes earlier in a different pan than the medium rare burgers.

Also, remind your medium well friends that they are wrong, but you will accommodate them.

Also, I used regular Tater Tots because they didn’t have the mini-Tots. I prefer the mini-Tots.

if you are making Tots Preheat oven at 450°

if you are making mini Tots Preheat oven at 425°

Directions say 20 - 25 minutes, but if you like them crispy, trust me, you want them crispy, it will be more like 30 - 40 minutes.

I did it wrong in the video - I used 400°

Line a baking sheet with parchment paper – NOT Wax Paper. Apparently there are pages dedicated to explaining the difference between these two products. For example --- https://www.marthastewart.com/269281/parchment-vs-wax-paper

This is what you want.

Scatter Tots on the baking sheet, rule of thumb, maybe 8-10 tots per person or 10-15 Mini Tots per person?

Pop them in the oven. Set a timer on your phone for 35 minutes

Form your burgers into 6 oz disks that are just under 1 inch tall.

Go practice some songs or play a short video game.

When the timer goes off:

Place a pan on the stove over medium heat.

Sprinkle a tiny bit of salt and pepper on one side of the burgers – and or onion powder and garlic powder if you like.

Place the burgers in the pan in one step, seasoning side down.

Season the other side of the burgers. Be very conservative with salt.

Set a timer for 4 minutes

Arrange your buns (open) on as many plates as you have buns.

When the timer goes off, flip the burgers.

Set a timer for 2 ½ minutes

When the timer goes off place the cheese on each burger and then pop the burgers into the oven.

Set a timer for 1 ½ minutes

When the cheese is melted, take the burgers out and place each burger on a bun.

Turn the oven off and remove the Tots

You’ve done it!! Congratulate yourself!!

Kiss yourself for making deliciousness.
